"We did this last year with Year 8 and 10 and was incredibly useful. It is WELL worth doing and so useful to inform PSHE planning. The safeguarding audit team were delighted that we had done it. The findings are so so interesting.
"The findings are really comprehensive and range from what percentage of year 8 have breakfast in the morning to how many have tried this particular drug, to identity, health and sleep patterns, mental health, citizenship issues....
"It's essential for the PSHE and pastoral curriculum."
Young people, smoking and the influence of lessons
Young people, smoking and the influence of lessons
New research conducted on behalf of Department of Health reveals the anti-smoking attitudes of children.
PSHE lessons in school are usually the place where pupils find out information about many health issues including smoking. The PSHE Association rightly point to the good work being done in PSHE to achieve this result.

We were able to extend this interesting finding from our databanks, arising from SHEU's school-based healthy lifestyle surveys.
We find that 53% of 14-15 year old pupils remember lessons about smoking and found them to be of at least 'Some use'.
Moreover, we were able to show a link between useful school lessons and experimenting with smoking. In one survey, we found that Year 10 males were much less likely ever to have tried smoking if they thought their school lessons on smoking useful:

[P.S. This is consistent with a similar finding about useful drug lessons and drug experimentation: /content/page/report-drugs ]
