Self-esteem, research and young people

SHEU carry out research and provide Internet links to studies about young people's health and wellbeing.
Measurements of self-esteem are often included in the study papers and perhaps no other topic has produced so many, often conflicting, theories.

To help you on your voyage of discovery, SHEU's latest list of Internet links should set you off in the right direction.

Physical activity and academic achievement

SHEU are often asked questions, about Internet links to recent research, that contain a number of these keywords: physical activity, physical education, exercise, fitness, sport, school, attainment, academic, achievement, ability, performance, educational benefits.

The questions are usually straightforward and follow this example, "Is there a link between ..."

SHEU's latest list of Internet links should set you off in the right direction and, hopefully, you will find the answers that you seek.

Young people enjoy school lessons

SHEU asked young people, "How many lessons do you enjoy at school?"

Data from 51,498 10-15 year olds show that the majority report enjoying 'most' or 'about half' of their school lessons.

Cricket helping bad behaviour and the brain structure of video gamers

Each month you can receive the SHEU research resource emails about young people's health and wellbeing.
This month's email about 11-16 year olds has many links including:

"Teachers looking for calmer classrooms, more tolerant, respectful and well-behaved pupils should introduce cricket, according to new research."
... and ...
"This small study analysed a part of the brain associated with rewards and decision-making and showed that the grey matter of this area was larger in frequent video game players compared to infrequent players."

"Students and mental health" - from the SHEU research resource

Join the email list to receive research news each month about young people's health related behaviour.

"Students and mental health" appeared in October on the NHS Health News website. The authors analysed a report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Young People into 2011 report press release

Young People into 2011 is the latest report and 25th in the series that carries some trends data back to 1986. It is a unique, contemporary archive of young people from the Schools Health Education Unit. There are over 100 health-related behaviour questions and answers from over 83,000 youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15. They tell us about what they do at home, at school, and with their friends. The data have been collected from primary and secondary schools across the United Kingdom.

Education and Health everywhere

In 2012, Education and Health will be 29 years old and will be an online open access journal.

In recent years more articles have been made available as pdf files. This has increased access and given contributors more opportunites to have their work widely read.

The complete archive is also freely available encouraging contributors to write new articles based on previous publications.

Planning PSHE in your school (plus FREE resources)

- it's up to you now!
"It should be for teachers, not the government, to design the lessons and the experiences that will engage pupils ... reflecting their pupils’ interests and local circumstances." Schools Minister Nick Gibb.
SHEU’s view, developed over 30 years, is that the best way to explore pupils' circumstances with a view to planning PSHE provision is with a local, anonymous, survey of health and lifestyles. Have a look at the detailed book of tables and a comparison report your school will receive following a survey.
