LEA Curriculum Advisor
Role of LEA curriculum advisor in ‘Fit to Succeed’

The PE advisor can play a key role in the success of a ‘Fit to Succeed’ type project as they will have access to the key network of information and resources that can add value to the project for schools.

Specific tasks might include:
  • Giving key messages to teachers about the importance that activity can have on the overall well-being and performance of pupils in school. The keynote speech at any project launch might well be delivered most effectively by the PE advisor.
  • To influence other LEA colleagues and generate support for the project from other subject specialist advisers.
  • To provide strategic direction for the project and help establish the target groups of schools within an area.
  • Encourage schools to become involved in the project. Using opportunities like conferences and courses to disseminate the project ideas as widely as possible.
  • To provide guidance on policy, procedures and protocol for both activities and the involvement of AOTT’s.
  • Support schools to attract funding for buying new equipment to develop new activities on school sites. Applications for awards for all grants can be cumbersome and off-putting for many busy schools. Running a session to encourage schools to design bids to develop activities on their own sites can support a number of schools in an efficient way.
  • Increasing the numbers of 'Adults Other Than Teachers' (AOTTs) who are qualified to run clubs and activities on school sites. Offering Physical Education Awareness Courses to AOTTs can be a vital first step in removing the dependence of activity away from the teaching staff and into the wider school community.
  • Ensuring that all the correct procedures have been followed when any new activity scheme is set up on a school site. By sending out guidelines for all schools to follow concerning child protection and safety of activities, schools will feel more confident in developing new activities or employing others to work on site.
